Consider your Rescue skills before you launch your kayak!

CHECK OUT HOW HARD IT IS TO RESCUE THIS BOAT WITHOUT BULKHEADS
(SEALED COMPARTMENTS) front and back.

YOU DON'T WANT TO PADDLE A BOAT LIKE THIS FAR FROM LAND!

Paddle Smart/Paddle Safe/ or Don't paddle!

****Watch to the end to see Sea Kayak Rescues and Nils show off a kayak roll!

If you are heading out to independently paddle this summer really consider your skill level and practice your skills with your boat in a safe shallow and warm environment!  Or take a safety workshop as a private or scheduled workshop. (we are currently looking at scheduling small group workshops in June)
This is a great time to get your gear ready and know how to use it! We've got the gear you need available for shipping anytime or curbside pickup after Memorial Day or by special arrangement!

Essential Kayak Gear you should never leave home without!
  • Paddle Float (to inflate and use as an outrigger to re-enter your kayak even 50 ft from shore)
  • Pump (to pump water out in the event of a capsize)
  • Rescue sling: to be used as a ladder for a sure way to re-enter your kayak from deep water using your leg strength instead of your upper body strength!
Other key items and considerations:
Water and snack:  Always have a resource to give you renewed energy  Castine Kayak Waterbottle

Clothing: Dress in synthetic clothing:  Get one of our cool synthetic T-shirts!  We can also special order Paddle Jackets etc.  Watch for future posts for suggestions of clothing and transport systems!

Weather:  Always know the weather, Make a good conservative trip plan based on weather! Wind over 5mph can get challenging,... at 10 you want to be an experienced paddler/ It is calmer in the morning and at sunset... wind comes up mid day!

Water Temp: In Cold water 50 ft from shore you have a 50/50 chance of swimming to it. Know how to re-enter your boat and have essential equipment.

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR LIFEJACKET!
